Something Else Out There

Title: Something Else Out There
Author: suprockstar
Pairing: Draco Malfoy/Hermione Granger.
Rating: T, for pure angst.
Disclaimer:
I own nothing. I know, its sad. :/
Summary:There had to be something they couldn't see in the world. Something that could change everything. Something else out there. Because, this couldn't be all there was. [Set during HBP].

His lips parted, and as he was about to answer, he spotted something in her eyes that he did not see before. It was something he had wanted for so long, something so impossible that it was considered shameful for him to yearn for. The words that would make all this pain, all this anxiety, all this agony, go away, even if just for a little bit.

So this fic is too long to post on LJ, so I've included the link to it on Fanfiction.net. Please read and review! All comments are appreciated. :D

    Custom Drafted Skirt Part One

Hello! Long time lurker (previous LJ account) first time poster here.

I realized the other day that all my best clothes are costumes -- my "regular" clothes are all mismatched ill-fitting junk from discount stores, because all my clothing budget goes for fabric, etc.

So I thought I should make myself a nice "regular" skirt (I wear skirts a lot). I have this fabric (that's a quarter to show scale):

and I drafted a pattern based on the directions for a Revived Edwardian Revival Skirt from this (subscription) website.

Fabric is washed, ironed and folded.

I did just realize that I'm a little worried about the waist overlay, since I plan to use black cotton velveteen, and I only have a little bit. So I looked a little closer at my pattern pieces and discovered some issues. )

inside a dog it's too dark to read

Today, the internet have been talking about their hobbies. At least, my bit of the internet have - they've been talking about stuff they knit, crochet and sew, the hand-made cards they're hoping to do for Christmas, the astonishing cakes they can bake. I was thinking omg, I wish I had a hobby. (I'm even wearing a necklace my partner's mother made for me. O hai, artistic inadequacy.)

Then I remembered I write approximately a novel's worth of fanfiction a year, and felt better.

(It's a shame, though, that I can't make people things, but I suppose I could - I put drabbles into the birthday/festival cards of everyone who would appreciate it. In fact, I may do this, if I send any end-of-year cards this year.)

Three fic-related things, while I'm thinking about them:

    1. [info]yuletide sign-up is finally done, polished, dusted, and I hope that's it and I won't have any more last-minute realisations that I've forgotten something or I've misspelled something else (and omg, my recipient will think I'm a moron o hai paranoid interior monologue) or I've suddenly discovered a passion for, I don't know, RPF. (I think this is unlikely, but I redid my signup with six minutes to spare last year, so. You know.)

    2. I have a fic in progress. It is a fic I have had in progress for a long time. It is a Harry Potter fic, about Hermione, and I've been writing it all this time because I really wanted to write a personal development story about a female character, and have it be good, because it was dawning on me that within the fandoms I write in, I don't do this enough.

But it would make sense, if I'm going to finish it before, er, January, to write it and post it before the [info]yuletide assignments go out. I don't know if I can manage this, but now I've written it down that I want to, maybe I will. Yes.

(Oh! Quick-hit: The Supervisor's Tale, by [info]a_t_rain. I meant to rec this at the time and completely forgot, although I did mention it to a lot of people - in brief, it's an adorable, touching story of Hermione writing her thesis with McGonagall as her supervisor, written for [info]femgenficathon. It's just lovely.)

    3. And lastly, a meme, nabbed from [info]thistlerose, partly because I iz sheep and partly because I love fic commentaries, reading and writing, and I never have the time to do full-length ones any more.

Pick a paragraph (or any passage less than 500 words) from any fanfic I've written, and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you'd expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

Fic is under the fic tag or, barring the very last few stories, in memories and slightly better organised.

That's it. Must run, Taruithorn awaits.

    TV400

    Day 2

First come the washing of the fabric.  Now, in the UK, garment fabrics come 'needle ready', so there is usually no need to wash beore use.  However, one of these fabrics is a quilting cotton, and they can shrink quite a bit.  The barrier cloth I got for interlining says 100% cotton and 'Dry Clean Only' on the label.  What's THAT all about???  So into the boil wash it will go.  I hope to get those done while I'm out for most of today.  I love automatic washing machines!  If I get the quilt cotton done on the quick wash, it can be drying while the other stuff washes, and then Himself can shove it in the dryer later.

I shall take a snippet of the greens with me for button matching.  IKEA doesn't have buttons (I'm going there first), but it DOES have fabric, and I'm hoping to pick up some cheap and cheerful calico for toiles and interlinings and the like.  John Lewis's this afternoon will have buttons, and since what we want (if we decide on buttons on one top) will be small and plain, I can see what they have...  I also need feathers for another part of the project.  There will be a hat.

This outfit will eventually be a set consisting of one flowery print top, one plain skirt, one plain fabric bodice with attached petal over skirt, and one hat.

    GRR!  ARGH

Best laid plans...  Washer playing up: have had to call out the engineer for this afternoon (Himself is out this morning, I'm out all day).  Await developments.

    Day 1

The pattern has arrived.  Interesting instructions...

OK, so before I do much else, I need a question answered: The instructions and notes say this is designed to go over a corset.  OK...  But the taking measurements guide shows no corset.  Do I take the measurements from my customer in her corset?  or do I go on the set of measurements I had for making the corset?

I think what I may do initially is dial up the dress stand to fit inside the corset and try a toile on that.  Vicky doesn't have any serious fitting issues, so that might just work.  We shall see!

Meanwhile, I'm off out and will report later when I have all the fabrics and boning and everything laid out.

    Later:

I found a nice 100% cotton to use as an interlining.  It's called 'barrier cloth'.  Dunno why...  Anyway, I'm going to shove it through a boil wash and see how it comes out.  I have some cotton sateen to use for the lining, or a nice cotton lawn.

    He vuelto con arte!

Hi all! Sorry for the absence, I promise you, I was not kidnapped! I will try not to make this disappearing act of mine a habit. But hey...it's part of my charm. Kekeke ^^

    Buuuut-

I really should be doing my dumb art project. And I should really be writing an essay. But such is my life, I always find a distraction. Here's something I threw together quickly.

..and yeah, I attempted photoshop again. I'm taking a digital art class! But-uh, I'm learning nothing about coloring. Right now, our project, that I am delaying, deals with layer mask. Pft, that is why I found this distraction. Kekeke

But! A new pairing (for me, at least)! Bellatrix and...Hermione (duh). Iz not xxx like the last image I posted up, but uhh, it's got dem sex eyez, haha.

Notes and queries (the gunpowder treason and plot edition):

Mostly, today has been Novemberish. Notes and queries:

    1. It's November 5th, and I am slightly wistful on this account; I am very tempted to buy sparklers and run around writing rude words in the air, but possibly this would like slightly silly just on my own. I do have a proper bonfire and fireworks to go to at the weekend, but waaah, don't want to sit in on my own tonight, want fireworks. Also a pony and a job, shut up self. I really ought to get down to work in a moment.

    2. Signing up for [info]yuletide from SCHOOL! That was a genius idea. And then I could sign up in Firefox 3.5 and not break all my add-ons.

Of course, it would have been more of a genius idea had I not a) not thought of it, and broken all my add-ons; and b) buggered up my sign-up twice running anyway. It's not like I'm offering thirty fandoms or something, I'm offering five and this year they come with handy tickboxes. Sigh.

(One thing that always makes me surprisingly happy is that according to the participants list, I am the only person in these parts of fandom writing under "Raven" or a variant, despite ff.net having appended "25" to mine when they outlawed non-unique usernames. It sounds silly, but I have written approximately 300,000 words of fanfiction over eight years under that name, and it's important to me now.)[1]

    3. Sitting up on Headington Hill while drafting Baby's First Deed of Transfer, I had a very good view of the sunset. I reckon it was too dark to read outside by 4.10pm. Am I the only person who forgets, every year, that this happens? That it's not something you read about in books, it actually is only going to be light for six hours and you're going to spend all of those in school. It was a depressing realisation when there is still almost six months of winter to go. To be fair there are things about winter I love - sharp cold, woodsmoke, the sense of things coming - there is still an aura of decrepit Novemberishness about the place today.

    4. On a slightly sillier note, Google have discovered a town that isn't there. On the whole, I think towns that aren't there are very interesting. Pripyiat is a town in Ukraine that isn't there, and Centralia is a town in Pennsylvania that isn't. They are both fascinating places.

However, [info]hathy_col and I have driven through that field. Mostly, we have driven through it at seventy miles an hour singing. The not-thereness of the place can hardly be over-emphasised. I am vaguely impresed.

    5. Other interesting thing from today's news: increasing numbers of people who aren't vegetarian, but eat very little meat. The article isn't very profound, but I have always wondered why this is never talked about - talk about vegetarianism in the media always seems to be framed by this odd (possibly Western?) model that people who eat meat are carnivores and people who don't are vegetarians, and there is no continuum between the two, and no complex reasons for why people eat what they eat, or anything.

There is no number six. I need coffee, and I need sleep, but I only get to have one of those. Into the breach again, I s'pose.

[1] Admittedly I do exclude the possibility that the name is not used because I have taken it.
